Restoration Project 2012.

And it starts .......  After finally acquiring all the necessary equipment to start this large project I at last got to spend some serious hours restoring some beloved family photos.  Many of the ones I have are in rather shocking condition and seem to be getting worse as time goes on.

A majority of the photos were taken with rather poor cameras.  Our family camera was a Kodak instamatic from the late 60's/early 70's and others were taken using the 110 format. Not to mention that the inks are eaten away, scratches, dirt and dust and the dreaded color degradation.  My work is indeed cut out for me to restore them to a usable condition.

Here is an example.   This family photo was taken 44 years ago in 1968.  Obviously at some stage my Mother was cut from the image as well as a whole number of different problems.

Scissor Effect.  Original size is only 3.5"x3.5"

A closer look reveals all the scratching, dust and dirt that almost forty five years have added to the original.

Years of neglect

The original was scanned at a high resolution to allow me to treat the picture as though looking through a microscope.  Then each spot and grain of dirt was removed. and blended.  Next came the repairing of the tears and creases and then building up the third of the image that had been cut away.  Obviously my Mother didn't make the cut in this one as it would have been ridiculous to try and re-create her for the shot.  Many layers of cloning and blending later and it was time to dodge and sharpen certain areas to bring out the detail that was barely there to begin with.  Finally a levels adjustment and the image could be re-composed and cropped.

Here is the finished photograph.

Dad, Kathryn, Helen and David 1968

Hugely satisfying and due to the resolution it can be printed at an 8x10 size without a loss of detail.  One to be framed and hung on the wall I think!

Better late than Never.....

This is another one of those projects that has sat on the back burner for a long time partly due to the size of the task and partly because I'm not sure what I am trying to achieve!  Well for this I had taken a series of shots in Manual mode to attempt to create a collage of The National Monument to our Forefathers in Plymouth, MA.  Of course I could (and did) take the same kind of shot with just one image but why do that if you can try and do this?   Anyway,  I hope you enjoy this one.  It seemed rather apt for today...  The background image is of the same subject but blurred out yet retaining the tones of the original.

Another day .... another panorama

I was out hitting some trails in the woods on my mountain bike the other evening and all of a sudden it opened up to this view.  Well ....  since I don't go far without my camera I was able to shoot a quick 10 shot pano of the view....   Wish I had a higher vantage point but hey, who's complaining with views like these?

Panoramic View

Today I finally completed the Large task of (almost) finishing the editing of my Panorama I took in Sunny San Francisco back in February.  To give you an idea of its size it is made up from 12 images taken vertically from the overlook at Bakers Beach and if printed on a standard printer it would measure 6 feet wide!.  Normally I would use a tripod but this one is strictly hand-held which has added to the difficulty in completing the edit.  However....  here it is in its 95% complete stage.  I still have some stitching issues to sort out and will do that this week....  Feel free to zoom into this (much) smaller version to see some of the detail.  Especially the two guys in the sofa enjoying the epic view!

Finally Pictures from my trip

Well a rainy Sunday afternoon has allowed me to finally get to processing some of my shots from my trip to San Francisco back in February.  I probably have around 300 of them to go through but here is a quick batch.  As usual I like detail and symmetry but I also had to include the typical Golden Gate night shot!  How could I resist?

And finally I found this on my hard drive.  Completely forgotten I took this.  Was taken on a stormy afternoon at the Marina where I work.  I thought it would look nice with an oil paint look to compliment the skies.

A fun project to try

Im always on the lookout for new techniques to try and when I saw this I just had to get my hands dirty and give it a go....

With my fondness of Black and White photography I have always wanted to display my shots with unique borders that nobody else uses....   First I painted some rough lines with black acrylic on some white card with a stick from my yard!   After they had dried I photographed the card and then stored on my computer. After a few levels tweaks I was able to use the lines as custom borders in photoshop....    it feels good to use something "home-made"

These are what I "painted" with a stick!

Something a little Different.

Here is as shot I worked on last week.  Made a dusk scene with two of my images (moon and boardwalk). Its nice to be able to use my moon image again in this way ......

Moon over the Boardwalk

A mixed bag

It's been a little while since my last post so I thought I would add a few shots from the last couple of months.  Landscape, Black and White, pet portrait, wildlife ....   a real mixed bag.  Enjoy!

Goodbye Winter!

The benefit of being stuck at home sick today has been the fact that I have been able to complete some of my Winter shoots from here and there.....  Today's four were taken on a VERY cold early evening back in January at a local Boardwalk.  More to follow soon!

Yarmouth Boardwalk. A snowy scene

Last week we had a cold snowy Weekend.  A perfect time to grab the camera.  Although conditions were "bleak", the gloomy weather can make some rather nice Black and White shots.  Looking forward to returning in Spring.

Recent Wanderings

Over the past couple of weekends I have been out and about with my new Pentax Camera.  Here's a quick peek of some of the shots that I will soon post on here...   Don't forget to click on the images for a closer look...

Buoy

Not done this de-saturated look for quite some time but this image seems to suit it perfectly.  The vivid green on the buoy is exactly as it was when the shot was taken with zero editing.

Something Different. New effects

Something new for today ....  I was watching a show on TV last night about the planet Jupiter.  I really liked the way that the Planet's colors blend into one another in a very "milky" way (pun intended) ...   so it got me playing around with the liquify filter plugin in Photoshop CS5.  I have converted two of my images using it and really LOVE the way they look.  Very cool  .....   thinking they would look rather nice printed and framed up.  Click on the images for a closer look   Enjoy!

Fall Photos

Here's a few shots from various times this week.  All taken at different times of the day.  Look at the differences in light.

Photography Contest

Photography contests are a great way to tax my brain and test my skills.  Im currently trying to find a good place to shoot a staircase as it is the subject of the latest one I am entering.  The hard part is first finding an interesting one and then the even harder part is not being allowed to manipulate the finished shot in Photoshop.  Here's one which HAS been doctored so wouldn't be allowed to be used.  However, I like the "infra-red" effect so I though I would share it.

Monuments

This weekend went from beautiful and sunny weather to wind and rain.  Here are two shots taken at Nauset Lighthouse and Scargo Tower and reflect the weather conditions I think.  From Tranquil to mean and Moody...

A few photographs now from various places.  This crisp weather is great for shooting.  Rich colors and the kind of clarity you simply cannot achieve in the Summertime.  Don't forget to click on any of my images for a closer look....
